Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Drugs – Coping with Ulcerative Colon Inflammation Conditions

Like with all problems of the digestive system, a patient that needs to follow a colitis treatment must keep in mind a set of indications that combine medication, proper diet and, sometimes, changes in lifestyle.

The inflammation can be controlled by using a range of drugs. However, some drugs work better in some people, while in others the effects are slow and unsatisfactory. When choosing a colitis treatment, you should always take into account the possible pros and the cons that come from side effects, which are always a potential risk.

One of the first things that a patient should consider is an anti-inflammatory colitis treatment

The range of drugs for this condition includes:

- Sulfasalazine – while quite efficient in ulcerative colitis, this drug has some possible side effects, like heartburn, headache, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. Also, there are some restrictions in persons with allergies towards sulfa treatments;

- Olsalazine, mesalamine and balsalazine – these can be found both as oral and topical, and your doctor might prescribe you a combination of the two forms. These substances are quite well tolerated by the human body and seem to have less invasive side effects. Nine out of ten patients who take mesalamine will feel relevant relieve.

- Corticosteroids – this line of colitis treatment drugs can have a lot of side effects, some of which are quite serious – mood swings, gaining weight, increased blood pressure, type two diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma, osteoporosis, and higher sensibility towards possible infections. Usually, doctors prescribe medication from this range only in severe cases where other types of treatments have failed. Moreover, long use is not indicated.

Another line of drugs for colitis treatment is the one of immune system suppressors. Rather than treating the inflammation, these drugs are used for influencing your immune system. Here are the most common sets of drugs from this range:

- Azathioprine and mercaptopurine – they can need more than three months to start working. This medication, aside other side effects, can also encourage cancer development. Of course, the chances are not that high, as these substances are legal and within the official risk boundaries.

- Cyclosporine – this drug is very strong and is used where other treatments have failed. It kicks in pretty quick, in up to 15 days, but the side effects can be severe to fatal, so you must ask your doctor about it.

- Infliximab – this one is also used for moderate and severe cases and it works quickly. It is efficient, as it can sometimes prevent chirurgical intervention. However, people who have suffered heart failure, sclerosis, or have a cancer history cannot use it. You must take a set of tests to see if infliximab can be dangerous to you. It can have serious side effects, like increasing risks of infection, blood conditions and cancer.

Other drugs that may be prescribed include antibiotics, painkillers, antidiarrheals and iron supplements. If different sets of treatments do not work, ulcerative colitis may require surgery, which often eliminates the condition.

Unfortunately, this usually means a removal of parts of your colon or even the entire organ, so patients should always try several colitis treatment schemes before turning to surgery.

Colitis Symptoms – Find Out the Most Common Signs

If you believe you are experiencing colitis symptoms, then you will find this article helpful. In medicine, colitis describes an inflammation of the colon. Colitis can be the result of a handful of things, like blood supply problems, infections, and autoimmune problems.

The colon (also referred to as the large intestine or the large bowel) is the final element of the digestive system. The job of the colon is to store the collected waste that results from the digestive process. Colitis symptoms appear when the mucosal layer of the colon suffers an inflammation.

The symptoms vary to a great extent, depending on the seriousness of the inflammation.

Some of the first Colitis Symptoms that appear are:

- Recurrent constipation;

- Gas;

- Almost permanent sensation of bloating.

Afterwards, pains and abdominal distress occur, usually associated with definite nausea and, possibly, vomiting. Another sign that appears most of the times in this stage of the condition is diarrhea. This is a clear sign that the colon is irritated. Because of repetitive traumatic pressure (due to spasms), small blood vessels are damaged and bleeding occurs. When this happens in addition to all the other colitis symptoms, it is high time you saw a doctor and commenced treatment. When the condition has completely set in, the number of bowel movements caused by diarrhea varies from a tolerable two to a completely exhausting twenty per day.

One of the most general sensations that colitis generates is a continual feeling that something is going on in the abdominal area. Ranging from very feeble aches to severe colic-like pains, these sensations pretty much alternate. Very often, the most severe pains occur after eating, which sometimes makes us believe that we are facing an ulcer. These two conditions rarely manifest themselves at the same time, but one does not exclude the other.

Pain during the bowel movements may occur, and these are smaller in size. Sometimes, this pain can last for hours afterwards, giving the patent a sensation of extreme tiredness. These colitis symptoms appear later on, when the inflammation starts becoming more and more serious.

The stools are altered, too, as mucus can be observed after defecation. The percentage of mucus is variable. Sometimes, the whole stool can be only mucus. Even if patients tend to panic because of this, despite of its aesthetically shocking appearance, it is not the most worrisome symptom and it does not imply a highly risky condition. More worrisome should be the loss of blood, as this brings a much more important lack of stability for the organism. The shades of red of the blood can sometimes be darker than usual.

In the case of any potential medical condition, anyone should remember this – if the condition always involves a certain symptom, it does not mean that the symptom clearly indicates that particular infection or disease. More exactly, diarrhea does not always imply colitis. However, if these colitis symptoms occur, even if you may suffer from something else, it is highly advisable to see a doctor.

Colitis Causes and Risk Factors for Different Types of Colitis

There are many types of colitis, and colitis causes may differ from one to the other. In the following article, we will analyze the different types and see what can trigger these inflammations of the colon.

First of all, there is the autoimmune range of colitis. This includes two types, from the group of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which are chronic: the ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Specialists are yet to discover the causes of IBD. The unknown factor (or range of factors) causes the immune system of the human body to produce an inflammatory reaction, which develops uncontrolled.

Specialists have come to the conclusion that there is a genetic predisposition to inflammatory bowel diseases.

However, the causes that trigger the process are not 100% clear, even if some theories have been offered by the academic community.

A more idiopathic colitis is the microscopic one, which can only be diagnosed after microscopic examination of the tissue. There are two types: the lymphocytic colitis and the collagenous one. This group, too, has unclear triggers.

For the lymphocytic colitis, some specialists have reported that the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and some anti depressants can be implicated. Overactive immune responses are also suspected as colitis causes, but there is no definite answer.

For the collagenous colitis, aside NSAID and depression treatments, smoking has been found to be a risk factor.

Thirdly, we have the iatrogenic class. For the two different types in this category – diversion colitis and chemical colitis – the causes are different. Diversion colitis is a complication of ileostomy or colostomy, two types of surgery, and it usually occurs within a year of the chirurgical intervention.

Chemical colitis is caused by harsh chemicals introduced to the colon, by a soap enema, other enema types or by other procedures. Chemical colitis can sometimes trigger one of the two types of IBD.

In conditions triggered by infections, the colitis causes are clear: enterohemorrhagic colitis can be caused by a certain type of toxins that come along with infections. Parasitic infections, like the one caused by Entamoeba histolytica, can also be a triggering factor. Most of the viral and bacteria related infections are food-borne illnesses.

Here are some of the common bacterial colitis causes: Shigella, E Coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter. In these cases, serious dehydration may appear.

Pseudomembranous colitis appears because of the C. difficile bacteria. The C. difficile generates a toxin that leads to heavy diarrhea. This condition may appear in patients that have used strong antibiotics.

An ischemic colitis has to do with blood vessels. Due to artherosclerosis, these vessels can become narrow. When this happens to the colon, the blood supply suffers and the inflammation appears. Also, the colon can lose its supply because of mechanical reasons, like hernia or volvulus.

Whether the causes of your colitis are traceable or not, the most important thing is to receive an exact diagnosis and to start an efficient treatment, in order to avoid surgical procedures.

Colitis causes, as you have seen, are quite a handful, even if we do not know all of them, and the more exact the diagnosis is, the easier you can find out what triggered the condition and treat it.

C Diff Treatment Methods and Ways to Prevent Infection

Possibly the soundest c diff treatment is prevention of the infection and the spreading of spores. Since c diff occurs most commonly in hospitals, nursing homes and other public care facilities, these institutions are the ones that should be the focal points of prevention methods and the control of outbreaks. However, personal action is also advised, especially for those who work in or visit these facilities.

There are a number of ways to prevent or at least reduce the risk of infection, some of these being:

Washing hands. When treating patients that are known to have been infected with this bacterium, thorough hygiene for hospital staff is mandatory. It is recommended that the hands be washed very thoroughly with warm water and soap, as this has been proven to kill off the spores of the bacteria. Visitors are also advised to wash their hands before and after contact with patients. Alcohol-based sanitizing substances should be avoided, as they are ineffective in the elimination of spores.

Cleaning the area. In order to reduce the risks of infection, all surfaces should be cleaned with products that contain a high concentration of bleach, since ordinary cleaning products will not kill spores. In certain cases, hydrogen peroxide vapor is used to sterilize patient rooms after discharge, as this method has been shown to be effective.

Protective clothing. The wearing of disposable gloves is recommended for all hospital employees.

Contact control. Patients with an infection should be given a separate room or share one only with other patients that have been exposed to the same disease. Children under the age of 12 must not be permitted to come into contact with infected patients.

Avoiding unnecessary antibiotics. The unsupervised use of antibiotics should be avoided. Usage should be as limited as possible. The antibiotics most commonly used in c diff infections are: clindamycin, ampicillin, amoxicillin and cephalosporins.

If followed correctly, these measures will considerably reduce the risk of infection and make further c diff treatment unnecessary.

Treatment:

C diff treatment varies depending on the severity and stage of the infection and the specific needs of the patient. In most mild cases, the best way to overcome the symptoms is to stop taking the antibiotics that caused the condition, allowing the gut’s naturally occurring bacteria to re-grow.

At the point where c diff colitis is diagnosed in a patient, it is indicated that specific c diff treatment be undertaken so as to avoid sepsis and the possible perforation of the bowel.

The treatment of the severe cases of c diff disease usually consists in the administration of the following antibiotics:

Metronidazole. The most commonly administered drug in c diff treatment. It is the most preferred because of the accessible price and proven efficacy.

Vancomycin. This drug is also used in the treatment of c diff, but only as an alternative, when metronidazole can not be used, as it has the tendency to make the intestinal flora vancomycin-resistant. It is most commonly used in cases where there has been no response to the administration of metronidazole or where the patient is allergic or resistant to that drug.

Fidaxomicin. It has been found that this drug has the same therapeutic effect as vancomycin.

In order to lessen the frequency of bowel movements and to prevent dehydration, a powder drink called cholestyramine is occasionally administered. This drug also helps in the removal of harmful toxins. It should be used with caution and only paired with antibiotics, as it has no anti-infective properties of its own. Having the same effect, powdered banana flakes are a good option to cholestyramine if taken twice a day. It has also been shown that treatment with probiotics is an efficient way to stop the c diff-associated diarrhea as well.

Not recommended in the c diff treatment when dealing with pseudomembranous colitis are the drugs used to stop diarrhea such as loperamide, diphenoxylate and bismuth based compounds. These have been shown to worsen those cases, because they slow down fecal transit, causing damage associated with toxins.

Currently, there is no generally applicable c diff treatment for patients with a repeated infection; clinical practice has shown that undergoing a new treatment with either metronidazole or vancomycin is effective in most cases.

The Most Commonly Encountered C Diff Symptoms

C diff symptoms appear when a person gets infected with the Clostridium difficile, which is a species of bacteria that causes several gastrointestinal diseases and also diarrhea. This unpleasant condition develops when antibiotics eliminate other, beneficial bacteria that are normally found in the gut flora.

The symptoms may differ according to the severity of the infection and the individual that got infected.

Some people who have been infected with c. diff do not show any particular signs of being sick right away – it is common for the signs and symptoms of the disease to remain latent for many weeks, sometimes even for a few months.

In this latent stage, c diff symptoms can often imitate the symptoms of the common flu, an aspect that leads to misdiagnosis in many cases. To prevent this error from happening, the symptoms have to be monitored carefully, especially in those individuals that have undergone an intense antibiotic treatment or in those who have had a prolonged stay in hospitals or other public health facilities and have complained of diarrhea.

For a more precise diagnosis, several tests must be performed in order to determine the presence of the c diff bacteria in the organism and the degree of the infection.

The most common method is to request a stool test from the patient in order to detect the specific toxins associated with the presence of the c diff bacteria.

Some of the most widely used tests are the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and tissue culture assay. Another way of detecting the c diff infection is by performing a colon examination, which entails inserting a small tube equipped with a camera on one end into the lower colon, in order to detect inflammation. In certain severe cases, where associated complications are suspected, a computerized tomography (CT) may be performed.

This test helps to detect the level of thickening on the colon wall, a condition often associated with pseudomembranous colitis.

The degree of infection may differ according to how much the disease has progressed. In a mild to moderate stage, the main c diff symptoms are:

Mild diarrhea. This is one of the most prominent c diff symptoms, consisting in a bout of watery or partially formed stools. If this occurs over three times a day and lasts for three days or more, then that is usually indicative of a mild case of c diff infection.

Low grade fever. In association with diarrhea, a low fever (100°F to 101°F) also points toward infection with c difficile.

Mild abdominal cramps and tenderness. Combined with a mild diarrhea and a low grade fever, cramps and tenderness of the abdominal region clearly point toward the disease.

If left untreated, these c diff symptoms can escalate into a severe infection. In this case, it is indicated to seek urgent medical help, as the symptoms are not only very unpleasant, but they are also potentially life-threatening.

The symptoms of a severe c diff infection often include the appearance of severe diarrhea, meaning the production of 10 to 15 watery stools in the course of a single day.

This may sometimes be associated with the presence of blood or pus and a foul odor of the stool. This then leads to dehydration and severe abdominal cramping followed by acute pain in the region, due to the effort put into the bowel movements. Other severe c diff symptoms are the loss of appetite and associated weight loss.

In extreme cases, a c diff infection can lead toward the inflammation of the colon, also called colitis. Clostridium difficile is also the main cause of pseudomembranous colitis, causing the formation of bleeding raw patches on the colon, which may form pus.

In very isolated cases, the infection with c diff can lead to the occurrence of megacolon, a severe dilation of the colon. It has been shown that, in some cases, the infection with c diff can also lead to peritonitis, the inflammation of the abdominal wall, which may have complications such as shock and acute renal failure.

In the event that c diff symptoms are observed, then it is strongly advised to turn to a medical specialist for proper diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

Pain on Left Side of the Stomach

Many people tend to classify any pain in the abdomen as just stomach ache. They do not realize that the abdomen region has several other organs than just the stomach and it is very important to know which organ has been affected so that the right kind of treatment can be initiated. Apart from the stomach, there is the liver, appendix, and colon etc. in the abdomen region and it is highly likely that any of these organs can also be infected.

It should also be noted that any infection in any of these organs I likely to spread to the other organs in this region and so care should be taken to initiate proper treatment for the right organ so that the infection does not spread.

Of all the kinds of stomach or abdomen pains, the pain on the left side of the stomach is the most common complaint.

The abdomen region is basically divided into four quadrants, the upper right abdomen, the upper left abdomen, the lower right abdomen and the lower left abdomen. The pain is usually on the lower left abdomen or upper left abdomen and this is what is called as pain on left side of the stomach.

The pain can be mild or severe depending on the condition and the infection. It is important to note when the pain begins and how the pain is as well. In many cases, the pain might be mild and it comes very occasionally and goes off after some time. This might generally be due to some kind of food that we have taken and hence need not be taken too seriously, as long as it is rare.

But if the pain keeps recurring or if the pain is too high or if the pain is accompanied by other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, improper stools etc. then it might be advisable to meet the doctor to understand what the problem is.

You also need to watch out whether the pain has a pattern, like sometimes the pain might arrive just after you have had a specific type of food. If you notice a pattern, then it is better to let your doctor know about it so that he can make the right diagnosis.

The pain on left side of the stomach may come severely, suddenly and sometimes with fever as well. It is also possible that you have other symptoms like vomiting, chills and abdominal tenderness as well.

If there is a change in bowel habits with you suffering from constipation or diarrhea, then it is quite likely that you are suffering from a condition that is called diverticulitis or peritonis depending on the other symptoms, the amount of pain etc. If the pain is too severe, then the doctor might advise you to undergo some emergency treatment as they would like to make sure that you are not suffering from something that is life threatening.

Several tests would be made to determine the exact medical condition that you are suffering from and once that has been located, then the correct treatment can be initiated.

The pain on left side of the stomach could also be due to gastritis, heartburn or ulcers as well. It is also quite possible that the actual problem and the infection could be located in some other part of the abdomen but the pain spreads to all its parts which make you feel that you have pain on the left side.

The cause of the pain could also be kidney stones though it is not present on the left side. It could so happen that the stone is pushed out from the left kidney and so the pain starts at the kidney, spreads to the back and then to the abdominal region. Pain associated with kidney stones are usually very severe and need immediate attention so that the correct treatment can be initiated.

Ulcerative colitis is also a common reason for pain on left side of the stomach.

It is usually accompanied by loose stools, blood in stools etc and again, this requires immediate attention. Most of the infections in the abdominal region can be treated very effectively within a short period of time but it is important that the treatment is undertaken for the right problem at the right time without much delay.

Like many other diseases in various other parts of the body, it is important that the right investigation is initiated at the correct moment of the time so that the real problem can be found.

Pain on left side of the stomach could be due to infection in any part of the abdomen, and not just the left side, and that is why it is important that it is addressed quickly so that any serious infection in any part can be quickly found out and treated accordingly.

The Perfect Diverticulitis Diet

Diverticulitis is basically a condition of the colon. It is whereby the diverticuli get to rupture after a period of inflammation. The rupture always ends up costly even for the organs that surround the affected colon. This is because it tends to cause some sort of infection on the surrounding tissues which in the end turns out to be hazardous. Diverticuli are small protrusions that form on the walls of the colon.

The main aim of the colon is to store food as well as act as a passage for waste food as it flows to the anal region. In that case, there is a high possibility of tiny food particles clogging up the walls. The clogging gets deeper within time due to the pressure exerted on them by the waste and other food particles as they flow along the colon.

At the end of the day, they end up becoming small sac-like protrusions on the wall. Due to old age, they grow weaker and end up bursting. This is what we refer to as Diverticulitis. It is most common at the sigmoid colon which is the region at the end of the left-side colon.

There is a wide range of symptoms. However, people suffering from the disease often have no symptoms at all. Research has shown that only about 23% of those with Diverticulitis get to exhibit the symptoms. The main symptoms of this disorder include stomach disorders such as constipation and diarrhea. In addition to this, the abdominal are gets to experience some cramps that cause a lot of discomfort to the individual. However, when the disorder gets severe, the symptoms also intensify.

The colon gets completely obstructed which makes it difficult for one to digest. In addition to this, the pelvis tends to disappear and one gets to experience a lot of bleeding in the colon.

Treating this disorder can be very tricky especially in severe cases. There are various medical options given by doctors but the most important of all is sticking to a particular kind of diet that will go a long way in ensuring that one gets better soon. The diet mainly incorporates foods that are low on fiber. This mainly helps when the disease is still in its flare-up stage so as to get rid of the bowel volume. Once the bowel volume goes down, then the infection automatically heals.

Preferably, one should stick to a diet that includes 10 grams of fiber on a daily basis. This is the preferable diet for any Diverticulitis patient. However, there are cases where this diet does not automatically work as planned. This is when the condition was quite severe. In such cases, doctors normally recommend that one looks for a suitable multivitamin supplement to be taking on daily.

During a Diverticulitis flare-up, one needs some mild food that will not worsen the condition of the colon. Grain products are very good for such a diet. They are mild and at the same time are low on fiber.

To start with, white bread that has been refined and enriched could go a long way in helping you get well. Others include English muffins, buns and bagels. Most of us love rice, but in this case, it is avoidable to restrict oneself to white rice. It is better for your diet. Refined pasta as well as noodles might also act as very good compliments. Plain cereals such as Cornflakes are also good for your diet.

When it comes to cookies, avoid the very sugary ones. Rather go for arrowroot cookies or soda crackers. They contain very little fiber and can not in any way mess with your colon. It is also important to note that whole grains will only worsen the diverticuli; avoid them!

As usual, vegetables always boost your health. This is not exception; vegetables are a must. However, not all kinds of vegetables should be eaten when one is suffering from Diverticulitis.

Those from the cruciferous family are quit hazardous at such a time. They include the likes of kales, cauliflower, and cabbage and to the relief of many, broccoli. Alternatively one take vegetables such as potatoes minus the skin, carrots, cucumber, squash, beets, green beans, yellow beans, celery and the egg plant. You can also go for vegetable juices.

The fact that one has Diverticulitis does not mean he or she cannot eat meat. However, it is important to make sure that the meat is very tender and cooked to perfection. Otherwise, it might end up harming the colon. On the other hand, keep off seeds or nuts or even any kind of food that contains any of the two.

Last but not least, fruits are a must! However, berries and dried fruits are not advisable. If possible, stick to fruit juices. Prune juice however is not in the list of to-drink juices. Fruits such as grapes, peaches, bananas and water melons are just perfect.

What is Diverticulitis ? Diverticula are pouches on the outside of the colon. This condition is known as diverticulosis, which can develop into diverticulitis when a diverticulum becomes inflamed.

Diverticulitis is a common disease of the colon that is often caused by a lack of fiber in the diet. This disease produces symptoms that are common to many other digestive disorders.

The primary challenge in identifying what is diverticulitis typically involves differentiating it from other conditions.

Patients with diverticulosis often do not have any symptoms, although some patients may experience bloating, constipation and slight abdominal cramps. These symptoms are not specific to diverticulosis, and may also be caused by ulcers and inflammatory bowel disease.

The most common symptoms that indicate diverticulosis has progressed into diverticulitis include pain in the lower left quadrant of the abdomen, fever and an elevated white blood cell count. Diverticulitis can also cause constipation, diarrhea and nausea.

The sigmoid colon is on the left side of the abdomen and is the most common location of diverticulitis. People who want to know what is diverticulitis must understand that the pain from this disease may also originate from the lower right quadrant on rare occasions.

The severity of symptoms that occurs when diverticulosis develops into diverticulitis can vary greatly, according to the complications and the spread of the infection.

The most common progression of symptoms consists of slight pain and diarrhea early in the day that develops into sharp and vomiting at the end of the day.

The immediate cause of diverticulosis is currently believed to be elevated pressure within the colon, known medically as the intraluminal pressure.

The sigmoid colon is the smallest part of the colon, which means the intraluminal pressure is highest in the sigmoid colon. People who want to know what is diverticulitis should realize the sigmoid colon is most likely to have diverticulosis.

Current medical research supports the claim that insufficient dietary fiber causes high intraluminal pressure.

Diverticulitis must be differentiated from other diseases of the digestive tract. Diseases that often produce symptoms similar to diverticulitis include irritable bowel syndrome, colon cancer and ischemic colitis. The issue of what is diverticulitis must also distinguish between this disease and gynecological or urological problems.

Computed tomography is the most common method of determining what is diverticulitis. CT is an imaging method that uses X-rays to examine soft tissue, and is able to diagnose diverticulitis with 98 percent accuracy.

This procedure typically requires the patient to ingesting a dye that will provide contrast between the colon and surrounding tissue.

The CT scan usually consists of transverse images of the patient’s abdomen taken at 5mm intervals. The radiologist examines the digestive tract for diverticula, particularly in the area from which the symptoms are originating. Complications of diverticulitis such as an abscess may also be visible on the CT scans. The CT scan is often used to drain abscesses caused by diverticulitis.

Additional studies used to diagnose what is diverticulitis include colonoscopy and a barium enema.

A colonoscopy is the examination of the colon with a camera attached to a flexible cable known as an endoscope. A barium enema is a study that involves filling the colon with barium sulfate and taking X-rays of the colon.

These procedures are invasive and carry the risk of perforating the bowel. They are therefore contraindicated in cases of acute diverticulitis.

A look at Colon Infections and Colon Infection Antibiotics

Colon Infection Antibiotics – as with other areas of the body, the colon too can become infected by different strains of bacteria, in which case one would need to use suitable colon infection antibiotics. Ironically however, antibiotics are quite often what trigger an infection since they destroy not only bad bacteria, but also plenty of good bacteria.

While the antibiotics don’t actually cause the infection, they can leave the colon vulnerable to infection if too much of the good bacteria have been destroyed.

The Most Common Causes of Colon Infection

By their very nature, facilities such as hospitals are quite high risk because of all the germs and etcetera which are present. These micro-organisms are typically known as opportunistic bacteria, in that once they find a host with a compromised immune system, they quickly invade and begin multiplying rapidly. It’s at this point, once the bacteria are multiplying out of control that the infection sets in.

Apart from healthcare facilities, one can also get a colon infection from eating contaminated food. Pests such as houseflies and cockroaches tend to be the worst offenders, and are responsible for millions of different infections every year. Even a poor diet can trigger a colon infection, particularly if one’s diet is high in fat.

Common Symptoms of a Colon Infection

The symptoms can vary quite dramatically, depending on the actual type of infection.

For example, and infection caused by Clostridium Defficile bacteria (commonly found in hospitals) will for the most part cause symptoms such as:

Persistent diarrhea

Abdominal pain and/or discomfort

Fever

Colon infections resulting from the ingestion of parasites, such as the eggs of flies and/or cockroaches, tend to be of a more serious nature, and in some cases, a patient will require emergency medical intervention, which could of course include the use of colon infection antibiotics. With that having been said, the most common symptoms include the following:

Persistent diarrhea

Abdominal pain and discomfort

Persistent bloating

Unexplained weight loss

Intestinal bleeding

Some species of bacteria within the Clostridium family can also cause an infection in the colon known as Toxic Megacolon. This is a somewhat dangerous infection, which can in fact already be present at the time of birth. The hallmark sign of this particular infection is a severely dilated colon which in turn causes the following:

Excessive bloating

Constant dehydration

Abdominal pain

Fever

Increased heart rate

How Are Colon Infections Treated ?

In a great many cases, a person’s own defense mechanisms will overcome the infection, particularly if it’s only a relatively mild infection. This is one of the reasons why it’s never advisable to take anything to stop diarrhea. When a person has diarrhea, it’s a sign that the body is attempting to eliminate something which shouldn’t be inside the body in the first place.

In more severe cases, a doctor will usually prescribe special colon infection antibiotics such as Metronidazole (generic name).

There are several other colon infection antibiotics, but Metronidazole is often the drug of choice since it is also routinely used to treat a wide range of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.

Colon Infections and Cancer

While one will no doubt come across articles on the internet warning people that colon infections can cause cancer, there is so far to concrete medical evidence to back such claims.

However, some studies have suggested that bacterial metabolites may increase the risk of developing colon cancer, but it must be emphasized that the results of the studies have been inconsistent at best.

If you’ve been experiencing one or more of the colon infection symptoms mentioned in this article, then it’s highly recommended that you schedule an appointment with physician, who’ll then be able to make a diagnosis, and provide the correct type of treatment.

Many people question the widespread use of antibiotics, but doctors are only too well aware of the risks, and you can be rest assured, your doctor will only prescribe colon infection antibiotics if he or she feels it’s absolutely necessary.

What is Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) ?

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus MRSA is a specific form of staph bacteria. While it is true that there are certain types of antibiotics that are used in the treatment of staphylococcus infections, MRSA is a bit more challenging to treat as it does not respond to the treatment in the same manner. This condition is also identified as “Hospital Acquired MRSA HAMRSA” and “Community Acquired MRSA CAMRSA”. The official designation depends heavily on the method of transmission.

The infections that occur as a result of this condition are considered to be relatively difficult to treat. As a result of this fact, many medical professionals consider hospital acquired MRSA HAMRSA and other types quite dangerous. Throughout this health guide, you will be introduced to many facts about Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus.

Causes

The bacteria that is identified as “Staph. Aureus” is considered to be relatively common. It has been estimated that one in every four individuals that are considered to be healthy carries this particular bacteria on the skin or in the nasal region of the body. In most instances, this bacterium does not result in complications, such as infections. Unfortunately, should the bacteria have the opportunity to invade the internal regions of the body through the means of a breakage in the skin, or medical equipment such as a breathing tube, it could result in the onset of an infection.

It does not matter if the infection is hospital acquired MRSA HAMRSA or another type, it could be become a minor infection or a serious infection.

For many, the infection could be limited to a skin complication. For others, it could be as serious as an infection of one of the organs of the body. The more serious infections affect those with immune system complications. Individuals that are in the hospital or another type of similar location often acquire Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus MRSA.

The following includes other locations that may result in the onset of MRSA

• Local Gyms

• Day Care Facilities

• Nursing Homes

• Military Housing

• Tattoo Parlors

Common Symptoms of MRSA

Out of all the types of MRSA, hospital acquired MRSA HAMRSA is considered to be the most common. When an individual develops this condition, they often experience many uncomfortable symptoms. The following highlights the most common:

• It is common for MRSA that impacts the skin to become swollen and discolored. In most instances, the sufferer will experience pain. Rashes may develop on the skin.

• When this infection occurs on the skin, it is likely that fluids will drain from the site of infection.

• Many individuals may experience respiratory complications such as pain in the chest region, a moderate to severe cough, and may feel as if they are short on breath.

• Discomfort may occur when a patient is suffering from Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus MRSA. Common types of discomfort include body chills, extreme fatigue, mild to severe fever and aches associated with the muscles.

• A person that is suffering from this potentially devastating condition may experience a condition that medical professionals refer to as “Malaise”. This means that the sufferer has a general feeling that is often described as being “ill”.

• If the infection affects a major organ, it could result in symptoms that are directly related to that organ’s functioning.

Treatments

There are several different types of treatments that may be used to assist an individual suffering from Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus MRSA. For individuals that have the bacteria on the skin, a doctor may indulge in draining the infected site. However, patients are encouraged to keep the infection covered unless directly informed to do otherwise by a medical professional. Despite the fact that the infection is resistant to most antibiotics, many doctors may elect to prescribe these medications in order to combat the infection.

In many instances, the medication is sufficient and allows the patient to overcome the complications that they are experiencing.

Unfortunately, if the MRSA infection is considered to be severe, this treatment may prove to be ineffective. It is common for many hospitals to prescribe fluids through an IV and possibly even IV medications that are known to combat the bacteria. If a particular organ is infected, treatments are often geared towards those organs. For example, if the lungs are infected, oxygen may be provided to a patient.

This bacterial infection is considered to be potentially serious. By educating yourself on the condition, you will have a higher success rate at overcoming the challenges that are commonly associated with it.
